Becoming An Empowered Client

IGTV Mini-Series: Empowered Clients Part 2

Welcome back to part two of the empowered client IGTV mini-series. This week, Brian and I discussed steps clients can take to become active participants in the therapy process. Whether you’re a seasoned client or new to therapy, there is something to learn from the insights Brian and I share! If you are interested in starting the therapy process, connect with me at Wingate Counseling for a free consultation.

Be More Direct

One key factor in becoming an empowered client is directness. The therapeutic relationship is an excellent opportunity to strengthen interpersonal skills. A good therapist values openness and supports clients in practicing skills within the safety of therapy. Directness includes speaking up when something isn’t working and providing insights into your experiences during the session. Empowered clients ask questions, voice concerns, and confront tricky feelings. Being direct in therapy strengthens the relationship and builds confidence to navigate concerns in other relationships.

Work Outside Of Sessions

A good therapist understands that their clients are in the driver's seat. Therapy isn’t about telling you what to do - anyone can do that! Instead, therapy is about empowering you to determine the best direction for your life and cultivating skills to stay the course. Think more self-discovery and less self-help. Empowered clients put in the work outside of sessions and truly take ownership of their well-being. This might mean making a plan for therapy “homework” to incorporate skills learned in sessions into your day-to-day life. Trying out skills in real life gives you and your therapist information to develop personalized support. Coping skills aren’t one size fits all. Empowered clients are open to trying new things to find their best fit.

Lead The Way

Not only does “therapy homework” give you more insights about yourself, but it also is a source of data to explore in the following sessions. Empowered clients know that it’s helpful to have a direction or point of discussion in mind to get the most out of therapy. Bring in examples of efforts to use new skills, journal entries from tricky days, or specific questions to process in the session. It’s your job as an empowered client to lead the way each week rather than asking the therapist to determine your needs. Spend some time writing in a journal or reflecting on your week before coming to sessions. That will help you get organized and understand your goals for the session. Remember, it’s the job of a therapist to walk alongside you on your journey of becoming the best version of yourself.

The Bottom Line

Empowered clients understand that the more they invest, the more they flourish. Take steps to be more direct, work outside of sessions, and lead the way during the therapeutic process. Investing in your therapeutic relationship is an investment in your self-discovery and well-being.
